How to care for vinyl records

A few simple habits help protect second-hand vinyl records and their sleeves between listening sessions.

Handle the edges

Use clean hands and hold a record by its outer edge and label area. Avoid touching the playing surface. Return it to its sleeve after use.

Store upright

Keep records upright and supported on sturdy shelving, rather than in leaning piles. Use protective sleeves and avoid overpacking. Choose a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, radiators and damp.

Clean with care

Use equipment and cleaning products specifically intended for vinyl, following their instructions. Do not improvise with household cleaners or aggressive rubbing. Keep the label dry, and allow a cleaned record to dry fully before playing or resleeving it.

Remember the limits

Cleaning can remove dirt, but it does not repair scratches, groove wear or warps. Check the condition notes before buying, rather than expecting cleaning to restore a worn copy.
